The Story
Maree returned home from work, though the place wasn't really her 'home', just a temporary apartment that she was living in with her mother after the woman had recently divorced her father. They had a new house lined up in the suburbs on a street named Sapphire Lane, and all the details had been sorted but it was still a fortnight until they could move in so were currently staying in a rental apartment with most of their things in storage.
She was twenty-one years old, of mixed ethnicity with a light skin tone, not being black like her father or pale white like her mother. She was very pretty, having inherited several black facial features including a broader nose and fuller lips, and frizzy thick hair she styled in long box braids, though she had inherited its fiery ginger colour from her mother along with her blue eyes. Her body was slender though she was fairly busty with perky breasts, and had athletic legs and a firm butt.
"Hi mom." Maree said, not having to call very loud as the apartment was small, so the woman could easily hear her from the tiny kitchen she was preparing dinner.
"Hey sweetie, good day at work?" Her mom, Maitland, responded. She was in her late forties, once slender though having slowly developed a more curvy 'mom bod' with plumper arms and thighs though still could be called trim. Her breasts were larger than her daughters, as was her butt, but both were softer with milky white flesh contrasting with her long straight red hair and intense blue eyes.
"So-so..." Maree shrugged, going into the kitchen for a whiff of the food her mom was cooking, finding it was a green curry.
"Oh, I've been looking into booking that holiday we spoke out... I found a company called Lavender Cruises which seem to do nice ones at a reasonable price, with a weeklong one leaving this weekend!"
"A cruise? Sure if that's the kind of holiday you'd like mom."
"It says it is female only! Just what I need as I could do without men for a while..." Maitland told her daughter, passing the girl her phone so she could look at the website. They had discussed a holiday earlier that week after they had got all the details of the new house confirmed and finalised, with Maitland feeling like she could do with a holiday before moving in, and Maree agreeing, feeling some time away to relax would be good for her mom after the divorce, and good for her too. She hadn't been expecting a cruise but was happy to go with whatever pleased the woman, and agreed it did look nice on the website.
However something seemed a little unusual with the female only rule, as well as it being adults only too, and reading between the lines, and looking at pictures of previous cruises, Maree couldn't help suspecting it was intended for lesbian women, either swinging as a couple, or on their own looking to hook up. The girl was a lesbian herself, and knew lavender was after all a colour commonly associated with representing women who loved other women, so all this checked out, and she wondered if her mother was aware, though doubted it as the woman often failed to pick up subtleties.
Maree was about to tell her mom her suspicions but decided to hold her tongue, after all it would be a funny story, and she was sure being surrounded by lesbian women wouldn't hurt her recently divorced mother... and might even give her a boost if she found herself flirted with. The girl wasn't sure what her mom's sexuality was, rarely bringing it up as knew it wasn't an appealing topic for a woman who had been trapped in a loveless marriage for so long... but perhaps the cruise would even be a chance for her to explore it.
"Sure mom, looks lovely." Maree grinned, handing the woman back her phone.
"Perfect, I'll book it after we've finished dinner!" Maitland beamed, excited.

The two women had to visit their storage to get some things for the cruise, both making sure they had swimwear, summer outfits, and some nice dresses to wear in the evening. Maitland was becoming increasingly excited, and Maree too found herself caught up in the anticipation, definitely feeling like she deserved a week off work on a boat in the sun, where she could spend her days sunbathing by the pool and perhaps even flirting with some girls...
On Saturday, when the cruise was due to disembark, they got up early to drive the few hours to the dock where they boarded the small ship, and Maree took the opportunity to scope out their fellow passengers who were also arriving. Most of them were in their thirties and forties, with a mix of couples and singles, however there were several she thought were older in their fifties and even sixties, as well as being girls she thought were around her age, even a few that looked just eighteen. One thing she realised was missing, besides men, was any mothers and daughters, and Maree wondered if her and her mom would be the only ones on the whole ship.
Though she was on holiday with her mother, Maree couldn't help mentally filing some of the people she saw away as having potential... after all if she was correct and Lavender Cruises were for lesbian hookups, it was entirely possible she'd be getting laid during the trip. There were a handful of girls in their twenties she was interested in, and even more in their thirties and forties as the girl had a preference for women who were older... and she even found herself exchanging flirty smiles with a few until she was pulled out her reverie by her mom speaking.
"C'mon Maree, the stewardess is going to show us to our cabin."
With help from the stewardess, who fittingly was dressed in a lavender uniform, they carried their luggage to a room which was unsurprisingly small, but a little more spacious than the girl had been expecting on a cruise ship of that size. The room had a double bed, and Maree was waiting for the stewardess to show them where their second cabin was until she realised she was going to be sharing the room with her mom.
She blushed to herself, realising she hadn't asked the woman to book her a separate room, and thinking she shouldn't be surprised, as having just one shared room was likely half the price of two singles. She didn't exactly mind sharing with her mom, but just silently said goodbye to the possibility of sleeping with anyone, at least in her cabin... she still could always go back to someone else's though she would now have to explain her absence to her mom which was perhaps a little awkward.
"Oh, a double bed?" Maitland asked, thinking she would have opted for two single beds then realised she couldn't remember that being an option.
"Yes ma'am, sorry we don't have rooms big enough for king sized beds, so all the rooms have doubles." The stewardess explained, slightly misunderstanding the woman's question.
"That's okay, its lovely." Maree smiled, and the stewardess left them alone.
"Oops, sorry, I didn't realise we'd be sharing a bed!" Maitland said.
