The house was quiet after Aunt Adelle left. It took a long time to convince her that we didn't need her to stay. She was very insistent, saying that we were still going through the bereavement process and one never knew when the grief might overcome him or her. I was glad that Daddy convinced her to leave; I was bursting with sexual tension and I didn't think I'd be able to wait another minute much less another day. I showered, put on some comfortable pajamas and went downstairs to find him.
Daddy was standing in the doorway that led out onto the back patio, a glass in his hand. I stopped at the bar to make a drink for myself, opting for ice and Pepsi mixed with my Jim Beam. I brought the bottle over to where he stood and poured a couple of shots into his rocks glass. He took a sip, still looking out across the lake and I sat on the ottoman, gazing up at him while I sipped my drink.
"You'll have to be getting back to school soon." I didn't know what to say to that. In two days, I'd have to be back on campus and my life would be thrown into a whirlwind, trying to catch up with the week's worth of work I'd missed. "You
are
going back to school, right?"
"I guess so."
"You
guess
so?" He turned and looked at me. "Don't waste your future on me."
