Lori arrived at work that morning in an incredible mood. This was typical for her, and her coworkers all enjoyed her positive attitude, especially when things were tough.
She was a nurse, and she dressed appropriately for the job, in all white with a little nurse's hat to confine her hair. She was 27, about five foot 9, with brown hair and eyes, and a warm smile that could melt a snowman.
She went over the list of duties for the day, making both mental and written notes pertaining to each patient, flipping the three page work order, pursing her lips.
She turned to see another nurse approaching her. It was her supervisor, nurse Walther. She smiled too, but hers was a bit more world-weary.
"Lori, it's so nice to see you today." She reached out and took the clipboard from her. "We've got a special patient and I'm going to re-assign you to him. Someone else will take your current assignments.
"It's a young man, 18, and he's been in a terrible car accident. He has a broken jaw and collarbone, plus two broken arms. He's basically an invalid. He's been transferred here from Seattle where he's been for the last three weeks. He's coming along well, but he needs full time support right now, possibly for another month. His mother will be here later today and you'll meet with her. She's been hands-on the entire time, helping us whenever and however she can, and she's been pretty nice, truthfully. You'll confer with her and she'll kind of bring you up to speed with how he's been treated in Seattle. Do you think you're up for this? It's going to be just you and Emma who'll spell you on the weekends, of course."
Lori was not daunted in the least.
"I will do my absolute best. You can count on me. When did you say his mother was coming in?"
"In about an hour, I think. I don't think there's a dad. From what I know, he's a straight A student who was riding with some friends. A delivery truck t-boned them. The driver of the car he was in was thrown out of the vehicle, but wasn't injured too badly, and the other two in back had seatbelts on. He was just about to clip his on when they got hit, right on the side that he was sitting. It broke his arms and his hands as well, plus the collarbone and jaw. He was in the ICU for three weeks, but now he's here and he's been assigned a room of his own. He's a bit out of it as you can imagine, and we've got him on serious pain killers as well. This is going to ask a lot of you. 10 hour days for at least a month."
Lori looked at her. "I've got this." She put her hand on Nurse Walther's arm. She looked worn, concerned, and very tired.
"Don't worry. Okay?"
The older nurse gave her a quick hug.
"Thanks, Lori. The last couple of weeks have been pretty intense around here. I'm trying to retire, but they just can't seem to find a replacement. The last thing I needed was a full-time patient, especially with the staff shortage."
"Why don't you take a break now? I can see everything is covered. Go on. Get some coffee."
Nurse Walther hugged her again, her eyes moist.
"God, if only I had about 10 of you. I'll be right back."
"Don't hurry. That's the point of taking a break. I've got this, dammit." Lori smiled at her, then gave her a push. The reluctant nurse laughed a bit and headed to the cafeteria.
Lori checked the new clipboard she'd been handed. There were a lot of things to go over; IV drip formulas, a pain medication schedule and other items. She felt in control, like she could handle whatever was thrown at her, at least right now.
She looked at the chart again. His name was Kevin Chafee. He had just turned 18. He was the captain of a chess team in high school and a swimmer. He had plans to go to college, but then the car crash happened so everything was on hold.
There was a picture of him. He was remarkably handsome, with dark brown curly hair and intense eyes. His swim team photo showed a well built young man, about six foot one. Lori's heart went out to him. He had been stopped in mid-stride and confined to a hospital bed. He had to be in misery in almost every possible way.
There was a little commotion at the desk and a woman of about 43 was talking with the receptionist. She was blonde, about five foot six, and her face bore a look of concern and stress. Lori decided that it must be his mother and she walked right up to her, putting out her hand.
"Mrs Chafee? I'm Lori. I'll be Kevin's nurse for the next few weeks."
"Oh, thank God. Lori, I... I'm going to try hard to stay out of your way, but... he's my only son. I just... well, I about had a heart attack when I heard he was injured and I've been there with him the whole way. I might... drive him a little crazy, and I'm desperately trying not to add to his misery, you know? You're young... and pretty. And from what I hear from your head nurse, you're very good. Have you seen him yet?"
"Well, I got this clipboard about 15 minutes ago, so I really haven't. Shall we go down there and check in with him?"
"Yes, let's do that. I've got a good feeling about you, Lori. I'm starting to relax now." She laughed and turned red. Lori took her arm and looked at her.
"I've got this, Mrs..."
"For heaven's sake, let's not do that. My name is Mary. Okay? My husband was killed in Desert Storm, so it's just Kevin and I. Let's go down to his room. I'm very certain that he'd rather see you than me, but I have to check in with him for a few minutes at least."
She turned to Lori.
"You know, you're going to have to deal with some very personal things with Kevin. He needs someone to help him.... poop. And urinate. He can't do any of that right now. He certainly doesn't want me doing it. I'm a doting mother, but there's a line we have to draw." She paused. "I don't know how you can even..."
Lori laughed. "I can handle it, Mary. I've done this for 6 years now. I've got experience with all of those things. I've already figured out how we're going to deal with it so he'll be the least embarrassed."
"Oh, thank God for you. Thank God. In Seattle the young nurses were kind of, well, grossed out. They managed somehow, but I'm not sure how long they're going to be nurses. I certainly couldn't do it."
Lori smiled brightly. "It's going to be okay. Let's go down to his room."
They took an elevator up two floors into a private section for people just coming out of intensive care. Lori knocked lightly to alert him that someone was coming in, then opened the door.
