When we got into the restaurant, the hostess said that there was a thirty to forty minute wait for a table. But one of the waiters recognized Terri from school and got us into a booth in his station right away. It was back in a corner away from the windows. The view was lousy, but it was quiet and cozy. Our waiter's name was Evan. He was short, stocky and muscular. Built like a wrestler, and from his slightly cauliflower ears, he probably was a wrestler. He was very friendly, and seemed to subtly appreciate Terri's cleavage. I caught him looking, but not staring. He said he'd give us a few minutes with the menu and left.
I said, "I think you have an admirer, Terri!"
She answered, "Who? Evan? No. We're just friends. He's in my English and History classes."
"Yeah. But, he got us into his station right away, so we wouldn't have to wait. And he keeps checking you out. I think he likes you."
"Hardly," Terri replied, "Evan's gay." Terri flipped her bright blue, Smurf-colored hair behind her left ear. She couldn't do that on her right side, because her head was shaved on that side. It was very radical looking, and sexy as hell.
I said, "He doesn't look gay to me."
Terri laughed and said, "And what does 'Gay' look like?"
I wondered if Terri had overheard me say that before. I just responded, "TouchΓ©." Then I asked the simple question I should have asked before, "How do you know he's gay?"
"Because he was dating some boy from out of town. Word got out. It was a big stink at school. He quit the wrestling team, or got kicked off the team. I'm not sure. I heard it was because none of the other team would spar with him anymore. And there was some sort of fight in the showers."
We ordered our food. And when Evan brought our Spinach Dip appetizer he said, "So, Terri. I heard that you and Tim broke up." Evan was trying not to check out Terri's generous cleavage.
Terri shrugged, "Yeah, that was a few weeks ago."
Evan smiled. "That's cool. Cause he's a real D-bag. I think he might have been cheating on you with Becca Burns. And I heard they're going together to the School Semi-Formal next week even."
Terri grimaced. "Yeah. Tim's a douche. Becca's not much better. I used to be friends with her."
Evan got flustered. He blurted, "So...I was wondering if you had anyone to go with you to the Dance? Maybe we could go as friends and stuff."
Terri scooted closer to me and hugged my arm. She said, "I'm going to the Dance with my boyfriend, Bobby."
Evan slapped his forehead. "Oh man. Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know, Bobby. I thought that you two were just friends. You're just kinda older, y'know. Oh jeez, that sounded stupid. OK. I'll-I'll be back with your food."
I held up a hand. "Hey, no harm done, Evan. Terri thought you already had a date for the Dance."
Evan looked back and forth between me and Terri, considering how much he should say. Finally, he blurted, "Yeah, well, me and my...uhm...boyfriend kind of broke up over that."
"I'm sorry to hear that. Why?" I asked. Then I said, "Sorry, I'm sort of a nosy guy."
Evan smiled. "No. It's all right. I was just sort of more 'out' than he is. Word had gotten around my school that I was dating a guy. But...well, word hasn't gotten out at his school yet. And seeing what happened to me, well, he didn't want that sort of hassle. So, he chickened out. He didn't want to come out at the Dance."
"Then, why did you ask Terri to the Dance?"
Evan looked at Terri's cleavage, blushed, and then blurted, "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know you guys were a couple."
"No. You don't have to apologize. I was just curious."
"Well, Terri is cool. She's one of the few kids at school who didn't freak out when word spread that I was dating another guy. She treated me the same. I mean, she still gave me shit and stuff. But she didn't make fun of me for being gay. Plus...well...you're like the hottest girl in school, Terri. And I figured that if I showed up at the Dance with someone as cool and, y'know, sexy as you, well then, that would just, I don't know, shove it in some of the creeps at school's face. It was dumb of me. I'm sorry."
Terri reached out and touched Evan's arm. "Don't be sorry. That was really sweet what you said. And I'm sorry you've been getting shit at school. I've been sort of getting a lot of shit too. When Tim and I broke up, he told everyone that I was a slut who would put out for anyone."
I saw Evan make a fist and mutter, "That asshole."
Terri continued, "And I'm not a slut who will put out!" Then she giggled, "Well, I'm just a slut who will put out for my Mas-I mean, for Bobby, here." Terri scooted closer to me and hugged my arm.
I interrupted, "Why don't you just go stag to the Dance?"
Evan shook his head. "That would just show that I'm a real loser. I'd be hanging out at the edge of the Dance. Nobody would dance with me, cause they all think I'm gay and have gay cooties or something."
"I'll tell you what. If you show up at the Dance next Friday, you can dance the fast songs with me and Terri."
"I don't know," Evan sighed.
"And the slow songs I'll split with you. You can dance half of them with Terri," I suggested. "That would get the kids talking at school. Right?"
"Really?" Evan asked.
"Really?" Terri echoed.
"Sure," I said, "Terri's Mom is one of the chaperones at the Dance. And I'm friends with her too. So, while the two of you dance, I could chat with her."
Evan shook his head. "Bobby, you're just trying to be nice. If I danced with you two, people would think that you're gay too."
I shrugged and laughed. "Yeah? You think? Well, people can think what they want about me. That seriously will not bother me at all. I'm well out of High School. It would be funny."
Evan joked, "Well then, wouldn't you be afraid that I might try to steal your girlfriend?"
I shook my head. "No. Terri is the hottest girl in school. And you can try to steal her. But you won't. You can get Terri worked up on the dance floor all you want. But she will be leaving the Dance with me." It was a firm statement.
Evan laughed at that. He said, "OK. I'll think about it. And I have to get back to work. More iced tea?"
