The rest of the week seemed to go slowly. Bri and Lara still had two more days of finals before they would be done with their classes. I spent a lot of time shopping for the graduation party for the girls. They had decided that they wanted to share a party, and her parents agreed that we could have it at our house. We rented a few tables and chairs so family and other expected guests could sit and enjoy graduation cake and other snacks. On Thursday, Bri and I spent the day with Lara, using the morning for an amazing full-out sex session, and the afternoon doing more work preparing for the party.
Sunday arrived, and it was a beautiful late spring afternoon. We all worked hard in the morning to get the party area set up in the back yard. Bri had to be at school by 12:45 p.m. so she could get set up for the ceremony. I took her in my car, stopping to pick up Lara on the way. Once I dropped them off, I went back to the house just in time to leave again, this time with Mom and Dad.
The graduation ceremony was held at the high school football field. We found Lara's parents and sat with them. The stadium was packed with happy family members and friends of the graduates. The band began playing the traditional "Pomp and Circumstances" as the seniors started parading into their seating area. Since they had to sit in alphabetical order, Bri and Lara wouldn't be sitting next to each other, but we were able to find both of them as they marched in with their fellow graduates.
Looking down as Bri marched in, I thought back to the time when we thought this day would never happen. She had fought so hard for so long with a brave face and a positive attitude. No matter how brave she was, it was looking like she wasn't going to win her battle against cancer. The lowest day was the day of her 18
th
birthday - which oddly enough turned out to be the start of her recovery. To see her marching with the rest of her classmates caused tears to drip down my face, and I looked to Mom and Dad to see they were in the same condition.
Both families cheered when the girls' names were called and they were handed their diplomas. The ceremony lasted a little more than an hour, and when it concluded, the graduates stood up and hollered as they threw their mortarboards into the air. The crowd stood and cheered - it was a truly remarkable day!
Lara's parents were going to bring the girls to the party, so Mom and Dad and I headed to our car. We got to the house to start bringing out the cake and other snacks. Soon the girls were there, and I was able to give both a big hug and kiss. Family members and friends of both girls started arriving, and for two hours, we celebrated the accomplishments of our girls.
Eventually the guests started leaving. Both families pitched in to get the back yard cleaned up. With a clear night forecast, we left the tables and chairs out on the back lawn, waiting to be picked up by the rental company in the morning. Once everything else had been put away, Lara and her family went home, and we went inside. Mom and I had packed our suitcases the day before, knowing that it was already going to be late by the time we arrived at my apartment.
It was awkward as we were getting ready to leave, since we all knew what was going to happen. I carried Mom's suitcase out to my car and put it into the back seat next to mine. Bri had followed me out, leaving Mom and Dad a time where they could be alone. We leaned back against my car, waiting for Mom and Dad to come out.
Bri grabbed my hand and said, "What do you think they are saying to each other?"
I sighed. "I don't know - what do you say to your wife, knowing she's going off with your son for a week of sex? I can't imagine what their conversation is right now, but I know it's filled with love for this to happen."
About ten minutes later, the front door opened and Mom and Dad came out. Bri and I started towards them as they descended the front steps. Bri went for Mom first, hugging her tightly. Dad came to me, and at that point, I had no words. Fortunately, he did.
"Take care of her, Timothy. I'm counting on you to keep her safe. Please text me when you get to your apartment."
I promised him I would. He embraced me with a hug, and eventually Mom and Bri came and joined us. It was a beautiful moment of family sharing on a very special day.
I walked Mom to the car and opened her door. Bri followed me, and once Mom was seated, Bri gave me a kiss. I walked around to my door, and as we pulled away, Dad and Bri stood in the yard waving at us. Right before they went out of sight, I saw them turn to go back inside, and Bri reached her hand out to Dad. I knew she would take care of him, reassuring him that Mom would be okay and that I would do all in my power to take care of her while she was with me.
We drove in silence for the first thirty minutes. Mom stared mostly out the side passenger window. I could tell that she was very deep in thought, but since we had such a long drive, I knew we'd have a good opportunity to talk about what we were going to do, hoping it would help her.
"Mom, are you okay?"
She turned to me with a half-smile on her face. "Yes...no...I don't really know. How do you say goodbye for a week to your husband of twenty-five years, when both of us know what's going to happen? How does one reconcile herself to the fact that she is going to sleep with a different man for the first time in longer than twenty-five years, and that the man she's going to sleep with is her son? You can't prepare thoughts for this, especially as you're leaving your husband behind to go do this with your son."
I replied, "I admit, when you look at it from that point of view, it is very crazy. Bri and I were wondering what you two were talking about as we waited on you."
