THE INTIMACY EQUATION
A brother and sister confront the Sibling Paradox
Ron Ehrs
I got up early on Thursday morning. My last exam had been Wednesday afternoon, and I finished packing my stuff that night. I headed over to the student center for breakfast. I wondered if Cassie might happen to be there, but there was no sign of her. A lot of the students were already gone, although I knew she wouldn't be leaving until Friday.
I went and got my car from the lot and parked as near my dorm as I could to carry out my stuff. It was going to be a long drive, and I wanted to hit the road.
I was headed for Lakewood, a small touristy town on the banks of Lake Quinn. My father had rented a house there for the summer. I think he was beginning to realize this might be his last opportunity to have us hang out together as a family for a summer vacation.
None of us had ever been to Lake Quinn before, but it was a well-known vacation area, and my father liked the idea that he could get in some sailing, his favorite hobby.
It sounded like a nice break for all of us. I had spent last summer as an intern at Dad's law firm but given that I was going to start law school in the fall, and I heard how much studying law students had to do, I was more than ready to take the summer off.
It was a long drive, about four and a half hours not including a break for gas and lunch. Fortunately, most of it was on the interstate and traffic wasn't too bad. Once I started getting closer, I had to head off to state and then local roads. I was glad that my GPS worked out here.
The last stretch was on a road that went along Lake Quinn, I got to see the lake as I drove. It was a beautiful day, and lots of people were out in sailboats. It was definitely a great place for a summer vacation.

It was going to be a while before I got to Lakewood. As I drove along, admiring the scenery, I began thinking about the summer ahead.
In particular, I began thinking and wondering about Cassie.
I had just graduated from State, majoring in economics and finance. I would start law school there in the fall.
Cassie was a year younger and finishing her junior year at State. She was majoring in history and politics -- I had no idea what she expected to do with that.
Even though we had been on the same campus together for three years, we hardly ever saw each other. I mean, it's a big school -- maybe 50,000 students, including the law school and the business school and grad students -- but it's not huge. Yet we would only end up running into each other a couple of times a year. And even though I was in a frat and she was in a sorority, we never ended up at any parties together.
Still, we did run into each other every couple of months. Maybe it was the amount of time between these meetings that made things a little weird. It seemed like every time I ran into her on campus I was running into a different person, someone I knew that I knew, and yet almost an apparition from another dimension. Her freshman year, she was a just a freshman, all excited about college courses. Now, that had all changed, and I would find myself standing in front of one of the hottest girls on campus.
When I ran into her two months ago, she was wearing a miniskirt and one of those shirts that left her stomach bare. While she was talking to me, I would feel my jaw dropping and my mind losing any hope of concentration.
And when she left, I would find myself watching her ass moving in that miniskirt. I don't mean that way. I mean she was my sister. It was more like just... observing. Right?
Thinking back, it seemed like that was about the time the girl I had been dating and I broke up. And for some reason, I hadn't bothered looking for anyone else to go out with since then. Maybe it was too close to exams.

My Dad was a lawyer, kind of a big deal, a name partner at the biggest law firm in the city. He did a lot of complicated stuff connected with major business deals, mergers and acquisitions, all that kind of thing. My Mom worked at a local PR firm, not as big a deal, but she enjoyed her work.
Anyhow, Dad's firm was holding a kind of vacation/retreat in the Napa Valley this next week, and obviously my mom wanted to go with him, so it would just be me and Cassie on our own for the first week.
I mean, Cassie and I would see each other at home on Thanksgiving and Christmas break, and maybe some other vacations, but then we were always just the kids in the family. It was never just the two of us. In a way, this was going to be the first time the two of us were together as "adults."
I had no idea what that would be like.

Eventually I arrived at Lakewood. The road I was on went straight through town, so I had a chance to get a look at it. It wasn't all that big, but it wasn't all that small either. Loads of shops, restaurants, souvenir stores, and a big section of docks where sailboats, fishing boats, tourist ferries and the like would come in. Pretty much what you would expect for a summer town. I was glad there seemed to be enough there to keep us from going completely stir-crazy.
The house Dad had rented for us was a couple of miles north of town, on a road running right along the lake.
When I found the place, it was one of many A-frames along the road and in the area generally. It was smaller than a lot of the others -- not really small, but some of the others had been built with five or six bedrooms to be rented by groups of people or extended families. This house had been built by the owners for their own family, the parents and two kids. It wasn't small, but it only had three bedrooms: a master bedroom downstairs and two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. There was also a separate two-car garage off to the side.
The kitchen faced the driveway, but it wasn't closed in, so it had a view of the lake through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room.
On the kitchen counter, there was an envelope that Dad had mailed to me and Cassie and had been brought in. I opened it and there was a substantial bundle of cash with a note from Dad telling us to use it for whatever we wanted.
There was a master bedroom on the left-hand side, and down from it, with a view of the lake, was an area with a desk. I figured that would give Mom and Dad a place to hook up their laptops and connect with their offices while they were here.
I went upstairs and put my suitcase on the dresser in one of the bedrooms. It was a decent size bedroom with a floor-to-ceiling window looking out over the lake and had a double bed. I guess the owners wanted to make it usable for larger groups than just two parents and two kids.
I changed into shorts and a T-shirt and put on some flops and went downstairs. Mom had texted me that they had hired someone to stock the kitchen in the fridge, and Dad had made sure to order wine and beer and other drinks to be ready for our arrival.
I checked the fridge and made a sandwich. Then I grabbed a beer and took it in the sandwich out to the back deck to relax. It was gorgeous out there. The sun was just setting and everything looked like a perfect picture postcard.
As I looked around, I noticed something on the right-hand side with a cover on it. I went over and lifted the cover, and sure enough, it was a hot tub. I put my hand in the water; it was lukewarm at best. I looked over and found the switch and turned it on to start the heater.
