Chapter 17.1
Sam raced after his beta through the forest just behind her. He knows she's just following her instincts and coming back to your own takes time. Watching her from behind, he wonders what happened to the bubble butt of hers. In wolf form, it seems like it shrunk. Shaking his head internally, he can picture that bubble-butt moving through the forest as his tongue hangs out of his mouth. Losing track of her, he backs up and picks up her scent and is running after her. He shouts in his head, 'Idiot. Focus on the job at hand and not with your dick.' Seeing her in the distance, he crunches down and sprints to catch up to her.
Reaching out to his omega, Sam says,
"Just a heads up. Your sister made it through the shift. Thanks to the Mistress of the house. She had another premonition the other day and coached me through. Just thought I pass that along. So how's Tanya and yourself?"
Following behind Vivian.
Tessa replies,
"Thank the gods. I was so worried when I left. Glad big-sister helped you out. Hate to lose someone you're just beginning to get to know better. As for Tanya, she's picked up a scent and following it. I think it's a deer, but it could be a buck. Where are you, and Vivian?"
Hearing from his omega brings a smile, but also something that pulls at his heart strings. Sam knows his omega is still suffering from past trauma of losing her sister and stepdad. It's got to be tough for her to lose another person she's close too. Taking a deep breath, he says,
"Not 100% but I would say we're about 2 to 3 miles out from the middle marker. Why? Where are you?"
Smiling, Tessa says,
"Interesting. We were about a mile or two from the Western marker and now we're heading East. It's kind of slow going, but keep a look out for that deer."
Sam nods his head and says,
"Will do. Wait a sec. Seems Vivian picked up a scent and is following it. It could be the same deer. Hopefully, I will see you soon, my mate."
He continues to follow his mate as they race through the foliage in search of prey.
Sure enough, they found their prey. A doe drinking at a nearby stream. Luckily for them, they were about 1000 feet from her. Vivian stops and hunkers down. Sam follows her lead. Reaching out to Tessa, he says,
"Found the prey. You were right; it was a deer, but not a buck. Vivian hunkered down and is watching her. We should be closer to you since we had to head west for a bit. Deer is drinking at a stream and it's alone."
Running through the forest, Tessa trying to be quiet as possible as she follows Tanya. She says,
"We're almost there, Alpha. The scent is much stronger and Tanya is running flat out. She must be starving. You should see us in 5 minutes. We should try to coordinate so these two betas can bring her down together. Sound good?"
"
As your big-sister would say, 'Sounds like a plan.' See you soon, baby."
Sam replies to her. Sure enough, they hear them breaking through the forest. Their eyes light up as they watch their prey get spooked and heads deeper into the forest. Nudging his beta with his snout, they head out to follow the prey, but on a different vector. Jumping over fallen trees, he watches Vivian head Northwest, watching the doe as she runs. Sure enough, the doe changes direction and is heading West, right into Vivian. With her tongue hanging out, Vivian leaps into the air with her claws out and pounces on the deer to bring her down. The wound is superficial, however the pounce decreases the time for Tanya to come up from behind and finish the kill. The doe is done for, but the fight is just beginning. Tanya snarls at Vivian, saying it's her kill and not hers. Viv growls back, saying she brought the doe down. They circle the doe and are ready to fight for the right of the kill. With their heads down, they eye one another and are ready to throw down.
Tessa saunters over to Alpha and rubs herself against him. Looking over at him, she says,
"Aren't you going to say anything?"
Sam looks at her perplexed and says,
"About the rub? I know you will say nothing but your affection for me is duly noted."
Shaking her snout, Tessa puts her head down and says,
"Not that. Your betas. They are really close to tearing each other to shreds. Your their Alpha. You should stop this."
Sam looks over at her and says,
"I just assumed that they had to eat first before coming to their senses about who they were once were."
Tessa laughs and says,
"You assumed wrong. You're the only male out here and they can smell your dominance. Once you growl and say what's in your heart, they will follow your lead. Instinctively, they will know who's in control and slowly but surely, it will come back to them. Once they get their fill, then you can howl and bring your pack together."
"
Shit. Maybe you should be alpha. You know way more than me when it comes to pack politics. I just thought they had to follow their instincts before they find themselves. Granted, that's what I had to learn, and my alpha wasn't there for me the first night."
Sam says to her.
Chuckling, Tessa says,
"Things differ from male and female betas. With males, you can leave them to figure out things the first night but call them the second to instruct them. Female betas can go either way, but a powerful alpha can stop bloodshed before it happens and teach them who's in control. Just saying. You're their alpha. Your pack, and your rules."
Sam looks over at her and says, "
Aren't you part of my pack?"
Tessa turns her head to him and says, "
I am. However, I already learned the rules prior to seeking you out. I already know who's in control."
Sam tilts his head to the left and grunts. He continues to watch the standoff and then walks forward. Looking at his mates, he growls really loud to get their attention. He then barks out,
"Both of you worked together to bring down your prey. You should feel honored, as I witnessed both of you doing it. Keep fighting amongst yourselves, and I will take the kill. Got it!"
Both of his betas whine and put down their snouts, showing signs of respect as they eye one another.
Sure enough, Vivian nods her head to Tanya to take the first bite into their late-night snack. She watches her sister claw her way into the carcass and pull out a piece of the kill. With a nod, Tanya steps back and lets Vivian take a piece. They go back and forth, helping each other rip apart the carcass and getting their fill.
Both Sam and Tessa sit down on their hunches as they watch the new betas tear through the doe. Looking over at Tessa, he says, "
You remember your first kill?"
Nodding her head, Tessa says, "
Like it was yesterday. Brought me a lot of joy bringing down the animal. However, I didn't keep it all down. When I changed back, and saw what I did. I threw up a portion of it. But for us, it's a sign of passage to come out of the forest with blood on our faces. You?"
"Mine wasn't too long ago. Brought down a buck. Don't remember most of it, but I kept it all down. Learning to walk on two legs was a challenge, but I got through it. Your sister was worried, but knew I had to feed and learn on my own. Would've been nice to have someone there for me back then. Save me from being awkward."
Sam says to her.
