On the next Sunday dinner, everything seemed to be normal. Sky and Kevin were in good moods and sitting together while Karen and I sat together on the other side of the table. Mom seemed to be happy with Skylar’s choice of Kevin as a boyfriend.
I had to chuckle at the thought that Kevin had been Mother tested and approved!
Skylar looked at me, “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing just a joke I heard at work today,” I told her.
“Tell it to us!”
“I’m no good at telling jokes, and besides, it’s pretty nasty.”
“Sunday dinner is no place for that.” Karen agreed.
Skylar frowned at me but let it go as Kevin excused himself for the bathroom.
“You better not let that one get away,” Karen whispered over to Skylar.”
“Oh, don’t worry mom,” Skylar replied, “I won’t.”
“Good, because I want some grandkids one of these days.”
“I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.”
“Nobody is dear,” mom told her, “If the sex is good enough, it just happens.”
“MOM!”
I had to laugh, “I can just see you with a huge big belly.”
“Shut up, Ethan,” Skylar told me but with a little smile on her lips.
Mom changed the subject as Kevin showed back up and sat down and stirred his coffee.
“Do you remember my sister Janet?”
“Sure,” Skylar replied, “We haven’t seen her in what a couple of years?”
“At least that long,” I added.
“She called me, and asked me if she and Carli could spend a few days here on their way to Colorado.”
Sky and I hadn’t seen Aunt Jan much over the years. She was married to an Air Force officer named Carl, and they’d lived all over the world at one base or another. Aunt Jan was a few years older than mom, and Carli was their daughter.
The last time I’d seen Carli, she’d been maybe 16 or so, and by now she had to be at least 19 if I guessed right. Sky and I had never really gotten to know our cousin Carli. I was curious about what she looked like now. I remembered that she’d been a really cute girl last time I’d seen her.
For that matter, Aunt Jan had been very good looking too. Well, unless she’d let her self-go to pot after all these years. I’d find out soon enough, and I was looking forward to seeing them both again.
“Where are they coming from Germany?” Sky asked.
“Yeah, I guess Carl is going to retire when they get to Colorado.”
“Is he coming too?”
“No, he’s already there buying them a house. My sister had to take care of some details before they could leave, and wanted to stop by for a few days and see us.”
Kevin didn’t have much to say, and he just listened to us.
“Ethan, I don’t have a lot of room here,” She asked, “Do you think you and Kevin could spare some rooms for them?”
“Fine by me,” Kevin replied.
“Sure mom,” I told her.
“Oh good, I was wondering how I was going to manage that many people in here.”
Kevin and Skylar left after we all pitched in and cleaned the kitchen. They said they wanted to go swim and relax around the pool.
“Have fun!” Mom winked at them.
Skylar grinned, and so did Kevin as he put his arm around her shoulders.
“I’ll make sure she does,” Kevin added.
Skylar elbowed him as mom replied, “I bet you will!”
“MOM!”
Karen laughed and waved them out the door. I was about to leave as well, but mom cornered me and put her arms around my neck.
“What’s my big handsome son going to do tonight?”
I put my arms around the small of her back and pulled her to me, “I don’t have any plans.”
“Why don’t you stay for a while,” She asked me, “We can sit on the back porch and have a few beers.”
“Sure.”
“Good, I’m going to change into something more comfortable. Grab me a beer, and I’ll meet you out back.”
I was surprised that mom wanted to drink beer. She had always been a wine person. I found a six-pack of my brand in the fridge and grabbed a couple. I went out the back door on the little deck and grabbed a seat on the glider.
Our small yard was well kept, and it brought back a lot of memories of Skylar and me playing hide and seek when we were little. Those had been good times. It left a smile on my face thinking about how much I’d loved her even then.
Mom came out dressed in shorts and a loose sleeveless white button-down blouse. It was apparent that she was braless under the almost see-through thin top. I have to say it stirred me down below looking at her. I admired the beautiful round curves of her breasts under that lightweight top and the tiny shorts that showed off her curvy hips.
“What were you smiling about?” She asked and opened her beer bottle.
“I was remembering Sky, and I playing hide and seek back here when we were kids.”
“Do you remember all the fights you two had?”
“Sure, we had some doozies, didn’t we?”
Karen laughed, “I’ll say, I thought you two would kill each other someday.”
“We get along fine now,” I replied, “Looks like one of these days she’ll be getting married.”
“It happens to the best of us.”
“Not me.”
Karen smiled at me, “Yeah, that’s what I thought to at your age.”
Changing the subject, I asked, “I hear you had a date. How did that go?”
Karen sighed, “It was fine; he’s been a client of mine for ten years.”
“What’s he do?”
“He owns the Concrete Kings cement company.”
“Oh yeah, I see their trucks all the damn time.”
“He’s been asking me out for years, and I finally gave in.”
“Why now?”
“With you gone, and now Skylar spending all of her time over here, it gets pretty lonely in this empty house.”
Mom looked at the far fence, “He’s already hinting at marriage.”
“Really? What do you think about that?”
“It’s too soon, but it is nice to have someone your age to talk to.”
Karen got up with a worried look on her face and went to the wooden rail of the deck. She sat her beer down on the railing and stared off into the back yard. I sat my beer down and went up behind her and wrapped my arms around, holding her tummy and kissed her on the neck.
“What’s wrong?”
Karen turned her head back at me, “I’m scared of getting married again.”
“Why?”
“Because the only good things I got out of the last one was you and Sky.”
“Maybe it will be different this time If you give it a chance.”
