The Wedding Part II The Aftermath & The Future:
Johnny and Katie's wedding caused obvious tension with in their families, but they had assurances if they were going to live as man and wife and the paternity issue would never be discussed again.
The wedding was in September. The first family holiday that passed was Thanksgiving. It was silent and awkward.
Katie was more nervous now that the Christmas holidays were coming because she suspected she might be pregnant. She went and got a blood test and confirmed.
Even though both Suzanne and John Seniors' view was, they didn't care about DNA. Katie didn't trust their big mouths on a grandchild.
Katie went to work on her shift at the hospital and then suddenly she couldn't believe what she saw. Her biological grandmother, Barbara, the woman who arranged for her to be stolen and raised by Suzanne, came in under full cardiac arrest.
Ever since she found out she was adopted, she has hated one person and one person alone, and it was Barbara.
But she figured John the senior needed to know it was his mother.
She rang Diannes' cell.
"Hello?" Dianne answers.
"Hey Mom, it's Katie is Dad with you?" Katie asks trying to not alarm in a calming tone.
It taken her awhile but when not addressing Suzanne; she called Dianne mom too.
"What's going on Katie? Is something wrong with John Junior?" Dianne was obviously panicking.
"No, no, I'm so sorry forgive me I'm on shift here at the hospital and Barbara is here. Shes in full arrest. Dad needs to be here." Katie explains
"Oh really, ok thank you, sweetie. I will find him right now." With that Dianne hung up the phone.
Before she dialed her husband Dianne had a thought similar to Katie's. Good riddance! She ripped Katie out of my hands, but at least the good lord let me find her again.
Dianne went to call her husband and now everyone agreed to meet at the hospital.
They moved Barbara to the ICU. Massive stroke. She's 82.
Everyone phoned and suddenly it was Johnny, his father, a few of his father's brothers and sisters, and Dianne, waiting on the news of Barbara's condition.
Katie was still un easy around certain members of the family. Before the wedding night, she was just an in law, but only 5 people, including Katie and Johnny, knew Katie was a full blood member of this family, not an "in law" only.
Dr. Rosholt came in with the grim news. Barbara had a major stroke. All they could do was keep her comfortable.
Katie and Dianne walked out of the room to go get some coffee, but it was also to stop themselves from grinning.
Katie and Dianne sat at a table in the hospital cafeteria.
"I've been meaning to ask you something. You were the only one that didn't come up that night to stop me and Johnny from consummating our marriage. Why are you such at ease and they busted in on us, including the woman who raised me?" Katie was curious.
"Katie, you do not know how many nights I have cried myself to sleep over what that woman upstairs did to both our families. I just couldn't break your heart like that. I know Johnny's, the love of your life. And I also knew if I tried to stop you, I would lose my son and my daughter and I can't lose βΉyou again. If you two were raised together, I'd probably feel different, but you weren't. You deserve all the happiness you can get." Dianne assured her daughter.
Katie couldn't help but cry at Diannes' sweetest declaration.
"I'm pregnant Mom. I haven't told Johnny." Katie couldn't hide it anymore.
"Congratulations!" Dianne was truly overjoyed. A grandchild on the day her biggest enemy is dying. She felt victorious.
"Ever since Dad and Suzanne busted in on us, I've been nervous birth defects or senior or my mom will get drunk and expose the truth about me and Johnny." Katie shamefully admitted.
"Katie, do you know for sure if you're pregnant?" Dianne inquired.
"Yes, I conceived on Thanksgiving or maybe earlier, I was going to tell Johnny on Christmas," Katie starts getting tears in her eyes.
"That's such a romantic gesture. But I think someone else needs to know before she leaves in a body bag." Katie knew right away who Dianne referenced.
"I don't want the uncles knowing," Katie protested.
"They won't just follow my lead and play along," Dianne insisted.
They finally went and brought up enough coffee and bagels for the family.
The last ones in the room to pay "respects" were Katie and Dianne.
"Katie, honey, make sure I shut the door and let me know if someone is coming." Dianne quietly asks Katie.
Dianne whispered into Barbara's ear:
"I thought you should go into the next world with 2 pieces of knowledge. First Katie is the daughter you took for me and lastly we are allowing an incest marriage and birth of a new grandchild just to spite you and I hope you spin in your grave knowing that I'm happy for my son and my daughter and my future grandchild," Dianne got to finally say her peace.
