It was the morning of my eighteenth birthday and I sat at the kitchen table with my dad while my stepmother June washed up the breakfast dishes. Dad was reading the news paper and suddenly let out a gasp. June and I both looked at him at the same time.
"What's wrong, honey?" she asked.
"Well I'll be dipped they're closing The Grand Theater, baby. I can't believe this!"
"You can't be serious Ward. It's a landmark." June said putting a hand to her mouth.
I shrugged, "What are you talking about?" June and dad looked at me like I had grown a second head or something.
"Son The Grand Theater is over a hundred years old." he said as if I were supposed to know. "In fact it was the first theater in Gulls Port."
"It's also where your father and I had our first date." she smiled at dad.
Dad blushed.
"Did the two of you make out there?" I laughed.
This time June blushed.
"That's none of your business, Roy." Dad got up and folded his newspaper and left the kitchen. He could tell he was embarrassed.
"So did you?" I asked June in a whisper.
"Yes, Roy." she winked and went back to washing the dishes again.
"I can imagine you two weren't the only ones. That place has more than likely seen its fair share of make out sessions in a hundred years."
June giggled and dried a plate and put it on the shelf. She had to stretch to do so and the little pink satin robe she was wearing rose up to show the plump cheeks of her ass. My breath hitched in my throat at the thought that she wasn't wearing anything under the robe.
June looked over her shoulder at me to catch me looking. She smiled and pushed her robe back in place. I've never looked at her like a mother no matter how hard she tried with me and she knows it too.
"Hey I got an idea June why don't we all go out to the movies tonight? Me you and dad."
"Roy your father want be able to go, he's leaving for one of his Corporate meetings."
"It's my birthday and he's leaving? Some things never change."
"I know honey but it's an emergency meeting honey."
"Where is he going this time?" I asked sarcastically.
"Tokyo."
My mouth dropped, "Are you serious?"
June nodded.
"So how long is he going to be gone this time?" I asked.
"Three weeks if everything goes okay."
I rolled my eyes, "Fuck him, I've never been important enough for him to stick around for my birthday."
"Oh Roy please don't be angry with your father, it's his job."
I shook my head, "Whatever!" I slapped my hands on the table and June jumped.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you."
"It's okay, Roy. I'm fine." she said and turned around and looked at me, "You and I can still go. Would that be okay?"
This peaked my attention, "What? Like on a date?" I asked, feeling myself getting excited.
June chortled and blushed, "I guess you could call it a mother and son date."
"Are we going to get dressed up and everything, you know like on a real date?"
June looked at me curiously.
I frowned and looked down and she walked over and placed her hands on my shoulders from behind me and gently squeezed. Then she did something I didn't expect she leaned in and kissed my cheek, "Sure Roy we can dress up."
I turned my head and gave her a peck on the lips, and her blue eyes went wide. It had clearly startled her. Dad walks into the kitchen and she quickly steps back as if she were being caught doing something wrong.
He paid neither of us any mind as he gets himself a cup of coffee.
June brushed back her shoulder length blond hair and quickly began gathering the dishes from the table.
Dad looked at me and smiled, "How's it feel to be eighteen, Roy."
I shrugged, "It feels the same as any other day." I said glumly.
The comment hung in the air for a moment as he stared at me over his cup.
"Roy and I are going out this evening to celebrate his birthday, Ward. If that's okay with you honey."
Dad looked at her and nodded, "Where are you going?"
"Mom is taking me to the Grand Theater." I said.
Dad gave June a strange look."
"What?" she asked.
Then dad smirked, "Alright if that's how you want to celebrate his birthday it's fine by me." Then he looked at me, "When I get back from Tokyo you and I will celebrate okay?"
I nodded but didn't look at him. "I guess it'll have to be." I said smartly.
A horn sounded outside and he nodded and put his cup in the sink then placed his hand on my shoulder, "I'll see you when I get back, Roy."
I nodded.
June walked with dad to the front door and I saw him whisper something in her ear and her mouth drops. Whatever he said must have been bad because her expression was one of pure shock. He grabbed her face and kissed her long and hard. Then he picked up his suitcase and walked to the Uber that was waiting on him in the driveway.
June closed the door as soon as he walked out which wasn't like her because normally she would watch him until he was down the road. But damn she looked emotionally shaken by what ever it was dad had said to her.
"Are you okay, June?" I asked.
She ignored my question and walked past me and began finishing the dishes. She was definitely upset about something. What did dad say to her to make her upset?
I stood up and made my way down the hall to my room and closed the door behind me. Shit at this point I didn't think we were going to the movies which would be par for course with the way the day was starting out. Heck maybe dad had told her that she couldn't go out tonight. Who knows?
There was a knock on my bedroom door, "Roy?"
"The door is open, June."
June opened the door and stepped in, "I ordered tickets for the seven o-clock showing of Gagging Gabby."
