This is my first story in this category. It has taken a long time to write and I almost abandoned it several times. I liked the concept I had thought of, but I am not sure I was successful in transferring it into a good story. It is also a little longer than I wanted it to be. Like any story of mine it takes awhile to get to the fun stuff. All characters are over eighteen.
Wildfire
I turned onto my street, glad that I chose to drive through the night. I knew after a quick greeting from my parents I would be in bed. I pulled behind the maroon Honda Civic that was parked on the curb. I wondered if she would still be home since I wasn't sure when she left for class.
I pulled the large duffle bag out from the back seat of my Jeep, pushed the worries about seeing my sister out of my head, and walked across the yard and through the front door.
"Eric, is that you? I thought you wouldn't be home until later." Mom called out from the kitchen.
"Decided to drive through the night, figured the bed here would be more comfortable and a lot cheaper than a hotel bed." I told her.
"Are you hungry? Doing bagels this morning." She replied.
I stepped into the kitchen, my dad looked up and said a quick hi. I saw my sister sitting at the table, a bagel and coffee in front of her. She looked up at me and I tried to read her eyes, they didn't look angry, but they weren't welcoming either.
"Hi Cindy."
"Hey." She said with a forced smile.
I loved seeing her smile, her perfect white teeth added to the beauty that her red hair, pulled back in a pony tail this morning, and bright green eyes already gave her. I took a seat at my normal place at the kitchen table.
My mom brought a toasted bagel and a cup coffee over to me. I said thanks as my sister quickly finished hers and got up from the table. I tried not to, but my eyes followed her ass, displayed beautifully in the black yoga pants she was wearing, as she took her coffee cup and put it in the sink and left the room.
"How was the drive?" My dad asked.
Okay... long and boring really." I told him.
"And you are home until, what May? What are your plans for the next six months?" He asked.
"Yes May, if a full-time firefighter opportunity comes about it would probably be earlier. I am going to see if I can find something to make a little money." I responded.
"And how likely is a full-time job to come up?" He asked, annoyed.
"Not really sure."
"So, we have one that partied her way out of her university and another who got a degree in wildland management so that he can as a part-time wildland firefighter, awesome.ยดDad grunted.
"Off to class." Cindy yelled walking past the kitchen. She had put a zip up hoodie on.
"You will be home for dinner, right? Making lasagna, since it is your brother's favorite." Mom said as she darted past the kitchen.
"Yes... I have another class this afternoon but will be home after that." My sister said, exasperation in her voice.
My sister was taking classes at the local community college, hoping to get her grades back up so she could go back to the state university. Mom and dad told her bye, but I chose not to say anything, figuring she didn't really care if I said anything. I finished eating my bagel and coffee, got up and put the cup in the sink.
"Going to go crash." I told my parents.
I headed up the stairs and into my old bedroom and closed the door. Every time I came home it was less my bedroom and more a guest bedroom. That was okay with me, but I did feel a little like I didn't have a home.
I tossed my phone on the bed and quickly stripped down to just my boxers and sat on the bed and felt my phone vibrate. I picked it up and opened the text.
'
Stay out of my room and away from my things
.' My sister had sent.
By things she meant one specific item. If I hadn't been so exhausted from having been awake for twenty-four hours her text would have started my mind and anxiety racing. I didn't respond and sat the phone on the bed before falling into an almost coma level sleep.
When I woke up, I looked at my phone and it was after four o'clock, I had been asleep for seven hours. I got out of bed and opened my duffle bag grabbing clothes and my shaving kit and went across the hall to the bathroom. I stood in the scalding hot water and appreciated the ability to enjoy a hot shower.
After my shower, I headed downstairs and found my mom in the kitchen unloading groceries and I stepped in to help her.
"Did you get some sleep?" She asked.
"Yes thanks, how was work? Need any help getting dinner together?" I responded.
"It was work and sure. Why don't you start browning the meat." Mom smiled at me.
I sensed movement behind me and turned to see Cindy had come into the kitchen. Her hair was still pulled back into a ponytail, she wasn't wearing any makeup, and she was still beautiful. I made sure I averted my eyes from her chest.
"Hey... how was class?" My tone pleading for a friendly response.
"Fine. The professors are okay but sometimes it just seems they like to ramble." She responded not looking at me.
I was happy she responded using more than one word, but I recognized her tone wasn't friendly. I thought I saw a small frown form on my mom's face and slight shaking of her head. Cindy grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and left.
