We just had the loveliest date. Because of the realities of life, sometimes relationships take certain steps forward quickly and some of the smaller, more delicious details get overlooked or left behind. But that's the thing with life, it's never too late to step back and to do what hasn't been done, or to try what hasn't been tried.
And in this case, what we did was have another first date. When life throws you together, and you find the person you're meant to be with, it's tempting to jump into the deep end. But the small things matter. So that's what we did.
I arrived with chocolates as a gift for her. Flowers are a burden. You have to carry them, keep them alive, stash them somewhere - but fine chocolates? Now that is something that can fit in a purse and be shared.
She looked gorgeous in her black dress. I felt insignificant and insufficient in the face of how beautiful she was. It hugged her curves, and her eyes - oh, her eyes. What can I tell you about them? Sharp as razors, soft as a prayer.
Normally our hands would be all over each other instantly, but not tonight! This is a date, thank you very much! Not a quick resolving of passions, not an expression of need, but a time for connection, fun and laughter. And that's what we had.
We started the night with dinner at a place that was new to us. It was her suggestion - and it had some unique qualities we wanted to experience. As it turns out, we were a bit overdressed for the place. And that's ok, we can appreciate the finer things but feel most comfortable when we can be ourselves - which is fun and silly and playful - and this place fits the bill. Dinner was actually fantastic, Mexican-Inspired but entirely unique.
After dinner and chat we took a long stroll through the city. I was bold by this point, and took her hand in mine. This was possibly a record for us being together and touching nothing more than hands - and I could feel her moving closer to me, but I was determined that we would not give in.
From there we played games. Not adult games - essentially kids games. I won't tell you where, that's going to be our secret - but we had an enormous amount of fun. She likes to challenge me, and sometimes she actually wins. I like a challenge. A few drinks were had (by her, not me as I was driving and I'm quite safety conscious!) - and some of the games were of a more physical variety. The type that let me walk up behind her, and put my arms around her - barely touching - but enough that she could feel my presence.
