I'm an old guy now but have plenty of time to think about my past. Some things make me really sad while other bring a smile to my face. I know we all wish there were things we could change about our past but it's not possible. I'm going to tell you about a few things that happened in my life. To be honest I haven't even decided what I want to tell you. I'm thinking about things while I'm writing this.
Let's start at the beginning. I was born and raised in a big city. It was sort of a badass town so I had to be rather bad also. I had a temper and it came out quite often. Through grade school and junior high, I got in a number of fights. I got my ass kicked a number of times but also won my share of the fights. Even when I lost, I got the respect of the people I fought with. I hardly ever had a second fight with the same person.
Back in high school, all I did was attend required classes and do my homework. I neither loved nor hated it. I wasn't a jock even though I could play sports with the best of them. But I didn't want to give up all my evenings and weekends practicing or playing sports. I was still known as one of the guys not to mess with. I didn't really date. There were girls I liked but never asked out. I think I was afraid of rejection. My first date was the senior prom. I wasn't going to go but my sisters egged me on.
They told me it was something I would always remember. I thought about who to ask and it always came up Cindy. I liked her ever since grade school. The problem was she was one of the most popular girls in school. She dated quite a few of the seniors but I heard she didn't have a steady boyfriend. I wasn't even sure if she was asked yet. After school, I waited for her outside.
When she came out, I went over to her.
"Cindy, do you have a minute? There's something I would like to ask you."
"Charlie, what is it? You hardly ever talk to me."
"I'm sorry. I guess I'm kind of a bashful guy. Cindy, will you go to the prom with me? I know that I'm not the smartest guy or best looking..."
"Charlie stop! I've always liked you and wondered why you never asked me out. I've already been asked by four different guys if I would go to the prom with them."
"I'm sorry. I just thought I would ask..."
"I never answered them. Yes, I'll go with you."
She leaned over and gave me a gentle kiss on the lips. "I have to go to practice but give me a call later or stop by so we can make plans."
I forgot to mention that Cindy is a cheerleader. Why she said yes to me I have no idea. I went home and told my mom I was going to the prom. A couple of hours later I drove over to Cindy's house to talk to her. I rang their doorbell and Cindy's mom answered it.
"Can I help you?" she asked."
"I would like to speak to Cindy."
About that time, Cindy came to the door.
"Oh, hi Charlie. Mom, this is Charlie Jones from school. He's come over to make plans. He's taking me to the prom."
Her mom looked a bit shocked. She asked me in and then asked who my parents were. After I said their names, I was surprised to hear she knew my mother. They actually went to school together and had been friends. Of course, she asked how my mom was and to tell her she said hi.
Cindy motioned for me to follow her into the living room. She told me how excited she was about the dress she bought then told me it was blue. We decided to go to the prom alone but join others for dinner.
When I got home, I told my sister about my date. She said she would help me get ready. Later that week I ordered a tuxedo--one to match Cindy's dress. Then my sister and I went and ordered light blue orchids corsage.
The prom was great. When I picked up Cindy, she looked so beautiful. I gave her the corsage and she smiled at me. As we got in the car, I mentioned to Cindy that she was my first date and if I did anything wrong not to be afraid to correct me.
At the restaurant there were six couples including us. We sat down and everyone was talking at once. I just listened. I knew everyone but wouldn't call them friends, just fellow students. A couple of the guys gave me dirty looks since Cindy chose to go with me. Some of Cindy's girlfriends were really nice to me. I knew them from different classes.
After dinner, we headed to the prom. We had our pictures taken and found a round table that seated six. Jake Roe was prom king. He was on the football and baseball team. Cindy was prom queen. Everyone cheered for them.
My only jealous spot was the king and queen dance. I found out later that Jake was one of the guys who asked Cindy to the prom. When we were dancing, I asked her why she chose me over Jake.
"Jake's a nice guy but only thinks about himself. You on the other hand left yourself in a vulnerable position. Besides, as I told you before, I liked you, we just never went out."
We danced a lot, mostly slow dances. As long as we were on the dance floor, she wasn't dancing with anyone else. When we got back to her house, I walked her to the door. She leaned over and kissed me. I mean a passionate kiss.
"Thank you Charlie. I had a wonderful evening and will always remember this night."
I waited until she was in the house and then went home. I felt as if I had started to fall in love with Cindy that night. We had three weeks of school left and she talked to me all the time. Even her friends talked to me. I guess I became popular because of Cindy. I asked her out and we dated the next three Saturdays. We went to an amusement park, the zoo, and to a movie theater. Once we even double dated with her best friend.
Graduation was coming up and I was feeling somewhat bad. Cindy was going to a college out of state and I was going to join the Army. I had some serious feelings for Cindy but I knew this would probably be the end of our relationship. Then I remembered the saying "tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all".
At graduation, everyone seemed happy. I went to one party and that was Cindy's. My parents threw me one but just invited relatives and a few neighbors. Cindy came over and spent most of the time with me. After everyone left, Cindy and I went down to the basement where my bedroom was. I was glad to be away from my relatives. They all seemed to be so nosy about everything. They even kept asking if I had plans for a future with Cindy.
I shut the door and sighed. "I'm sorry my relatives--"
"It's OK, Charlie. I didn't mind."
