Chapter 03: God Wants Me To
Even though Daniel had gone to bed before eight o'clock yesterday he still slept until nine o'clock the following morning. He woke up to the sound of his mother pounding on his door; a hideous way to wake up indeed.
"Wake up sleepy, we need to be at church at ten!" mom hollered.
"Mhm." Daniel replied sleepily.
Mom opened the door and stuck in her head, "Are you awake?" she asked energetically.
"Mhm." he mumbled and turned in his bed.
"We need to leave in thirty minutes so hurry up!" she reminded him.
"Gimme one more minute." he mumbled.
"Alright, one more minute, then I'll pull you out of the bed myself!" mom promised and left his room.
Daniel took note of her threat and got to his feet in less than half a minute to be on the safe side. He put on his clothes, went to the bathroom and ate breakfast all within thirty minutes. When he was done mom drove them to church.
After her father's death mom had become infatuated with a smaller Christian church called the 'Bible Presbyterian Church'. It was a more conservative and orthodox church than the one they used to go to and Daniel felt it was a little on the cult side. He had joined the church on her insistence soon after grandpa died, more or less just to get her to shut up about it.
It was always dreary to sit and listen to the pastor go on about some passages that made no sense, but today's sermon must've been extra strange since even the other church members looked like they were confused. Mom got something out of it however as she diligently nodded in agreement to every little syllable he uttered. When the sermon was over she was the only one who stayed to talk to the pastor, well her and Daniel of course as he figured leaving without her wasn't an option.
This must've been the pastor she talked about the duty of children towards their parents with as they quickly entered that subject. To his dismay mom decided to talk about him specifically.
"I've been trying to get him to help out more around the house and I've had some progress." she said proudly.
"Ah, that is always nice to hear, a young man who understands the importance of helping out his mother!" the pastor declared and looked approvingly at Daniel.
"Well he's not that willing, I must confess I've had to pressure him a bit to help out around the house." mom said unsurely.
"Oh, I see. Well that's perfectly fine as well, I doubt the good Lord would mind that a mother helps her son see the way...even if it takes a little coercion." he said and smiled warmly towards her.
Daniel wondered what the pastor would think about his mom's idea of walking around topless to test her son's virtue; he had a feeling he wouldn't approve of that very much.
"That's so reassuring to hear from someone like you!" mom said gratefully, "Sometimes I wonder if I have the right, as a mother, to influence him towards being pious or if he should have to figure it out himself."
The pastor looked at her reassuringly, "You are in the right child, there's no need to worry about that, it would be very unchristian of you to do nothing as your son lives a life that takes him further away from God."
"Thank you, thank you very much pastor for all your counsel." mom said and looked lovingly at the pastor.
"You're always so understanding and helpful!" she gushed admiringly.
The pastor smiled and looked smitten, "Nothing gives me greater joy than helping a mother in need."
"Oh you're such a good man! I've been under a fair amount of stress lately and wanted to make sure that I've interpreted God's words correctly and you always know just what to tell me!" mom said adoringly.
"I'm just a humble servant of God my child, but your kind words are much appreciated nonetheless." he replied and bowed slightly.
They told the pastor their goodbyes and left. While mom drove them back to the house she announced that there was something they needed to talk about when they got home.
Daniel figured it was bad news for him and probed her a bit trying to find out what it was about but she said it would have to wait until they got home.
Once they were back home mom led him into the kitchen where she had said they would talk, he followed her with heavy steps hoping the news wouldn't be too terrible.
"Sit down." mom said authoritatively and pointed to one of the kitchen chairs.
Daniel could tell that mom wasn't playing around, whatever she had in mind was probably difficult to talk her out of. He sat down with a growing feeling of unease in his stomach.
"I got to thinking a bit yesterday and realized I hadn't properly explained to you what the rules you have to follow are." she said as she remained standing.
"If I am to punish you for breaking the rules then I think it's fair that you also know what the rules are, don't you agree?" mom asked leadingly.
