We raced towards Mom's house, not knowing exactly what we were walking into. All we knew was that Mom was in trouble and it sounded like Aunt Brenda had managed to sneak a call in to warn us. Then, as if an outside source struck me with a wild thought, I quickly pulled over and came to an abrupt stop.
"What are you doing?" Sadie asked frantically.
"Something feels off," I said. "Does Ted own a gun or anything like that?" I asked.
"What? What the fuck are you talking about?" Sadie demanded. "Why are you asking this now?"
"Because, something doesn't seem right," I insisted. "Why would Aunt Brenda call from Mom's phone? Why would she urge us to come over and then just hang up? Why was she being so cryptic?"
"I don't know, Jade! You got the call, I didn't hear anything. You tell me!" she said almost angrily.
I took a deep breath, knowing she wasn't angry with me. She was scared for Mom's safety. Mom may have been naΓ―ve and turned a blind eye to what Ted was doing to Sadie, but she was still our mother. It's not completely her fault she married a guy who turned out to be a horny psycho! But the more I thought about Aunt Brenda's call, the more suspicious I became. It was as if Ted had coerced her into talking to me, saying just enough to get me to come to the house. My extremist imagination told me that he was setting us up to kill us all. It probably wasn't as serious as that, but things just weren't setting right with me.
"I get the feeling Ted is setting us up," I said. "Like Mom and Brenda succeeded in part of their plan, but got caught in the process and now he's trying to do something else to get..." I trailed off as I thought of the worst possible thing. "Like he's trying to leave you with no option but to be with him."
"What are you saying?" Sadie asked as I could tell she was starting to understand. Her question was half-rhetorical.
"I'm saying, what if Mom and Brenda were able to delete the recording, but he caught them just as it happened and now, he's trying to set a scene to make me look like the bad guy using our mother and her friend to cover my own ass so he can drag you off somewhere?" I asked.
"Jaden, I'm twenty-one, it's not like he can claim custody of me now," she reasoned.
"Yes, I know, but he's also obsessed with you," I told her. "When he was at our place, trying to get to you, he hardly looked at me and practically stared at you the whole time with this crazed look in his eyes. He's probably got a plan to get me and Mom out of the picture and coerce you into going with him somehow."
"I think you watch too many movies," Sadie shook her head.
She was probably right and I was overthinking the situation, but I also felt that it was better to be prepared for anything than to walk in blindly.
"Maybe I should leave you with Angel until I figure out what's going on," I suggested.
"What? NO! I'm going with you!"
"If you're not there, he can't use you against me," I argued.
"How would he do that?" she demanded.
"I know this is another insane scenario, but what if he somehow forces me to have to choose between you and Mom?" I asked her. "Both of you would tell me to choose the other."
Sadie stared at me and then lowered her gaze. "Yeah, we would," she sighed, finally seeing my point. "But what if he hurts one of you because I'm not there? I couldn't live with myself knowing that."
"I'd rather you live with guilt than not at all," I told her. "Guilt, I can help you through, the other option... There is no other option, Sadie."
Sadie sighed. "I'll call Angel, I guess," she said but then my phone buzzed again, the call coming through the Bluetooth of my car. It was Mom's number again.
I tapped the screen to answer. "Aunt Brenda?"
"Jaden, where are you? What's taking so long?" Aunt Brenda asked frantically.
"Where's Ted now?" I asked her.
"He's gone," she said. "Your mom is hurt, though, but she won't let me call for help. She's only letting me call you."
"Why are you using her phone?" I asked.
"Ted smashed mine," she growled. "Stupid fucker. We'd gotten a confession out of him that he was trying to get you out of the picture, but then he saw my phone recording on the coffee table. Stupid Instagram notification lit up the damn screen! We'd deleted the recording of the two of you already and were trying to get him to confess that he was trying to get you locked up so he could take your sister and mother far away from here. We had him, too, but then he smashed my phone," she explained.
"Why did you sound so hushed when you called earlier? You were rushing off the phone like you were about to get caught," I pressed further.
"Because I thought he was coming back! He hit your mom, she fell and hit her head on the coffee table and cut her forehead pretty bad, so he took off. I thought I heard a noise at the door, so I freaked out and hung up," she said. "I should have stayed on the line with you, I'm sorry, but I wasn't thinking straight."
"Where's Ted now?" I asked.
"I have no clue," Brenda said. "Hopefully his car is crashed in a fucking ditch somewhere. Just get here and help me with your mother."
"Okay, Aunt Brenda, we're on our way," I said and then hung up.
"That still sounds suspicious," Sadie said. "More suspicious than what you heard earlier."
"Maybe, but... Let's go check things out," I said, abandoning the idea of stashing Sadie with Angel.
I put the car back in gear and finished the drive to Mom's house. I drove past it a few times, scanning the street for Ted's Mustang, but it was nowhere to be found. I even went a couple streets over in either direction to make sure he really wasn't there, but no old, black Mustang anywhere.
"Satisfied?" Sadie asked irritated as I pulled into the driveway.
"I was just trying to be safe," I grumbled back at her.
We got out and hurried into the house. It was exactly as Brenda had described. The glass in the center of the coffee table was cracked and I saw the spots in the carpet where she'd bled from the obvious gash on her forehead that Brenda was patching up.
"She'll need stitches," Brenda said as we took a seat on either side of Mom on the couch while Brenda cleaned up her quick patchwork. "But that should take care of things until we can get her to the hospital."
"Before you kids freak out," Mom said. "What's done is done, you're safe from Ted's recording, and this was a small price to pay for how stupid I've been the past few years. I chose to look the other way as I'd suspected Ted of having an attraction to you, Sadie, even as a teenager."
